To address the life situations of older people, the United Nations proclaimed the International Year of Seniors in 1999 under the motto "A Society for All Ages". With this action, the international community wants to draw attention to a demographic development that affects both developed and developing countries alike: the rapidly growing proportion of older people in the total population. Aging affects us all - as individuals and as part of society. The global change in age structure holds opportunities and risks. However, the generations can only manage the challenges together. The United Nations has not only been dealing with the life situation of older people since the proclamation of the International Year of Senior Citizens, but in 1983 adopted the International Plan of Action on Aging. The proclamation of the International Year binds the individual UN countries to no specifications. In Germany, the Federal Government has set up a National Commission with representatives from politics, charities, churches, senior citizen organizations, the media, foundations and associations. But not only professionals should participate in the design of the senior year. The International Year of Seniors offers the opportunity to engage with aging and the elderly. In clubs, schools and universities, in churches, congregations and associations and not least in the family, in short: wherever generations are connected.
