International Year of Peace For the International Year of Peace, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues a multicolored postage stamp. Special cancellation from 5 August to 4 October International Year of Peace On 24 October 1985, the day of the United Nations, the 40th UN General Assembly proclaimed 1986 the International Year of Peace. The relevant resolution, which was co-authored by 56 states, among them the GDR, called on states and peoples to act with determination against all forms of peace threats, especially in the nuclear field. It is u. a. to the need to preserve space for peaceful use, disarmament, respect for the principle of non-use of force, peaceful resolution of conflicts and decolonization. With this decision, the world organization takes account of its high responsibility to unite the efforts of states in the fight against the threat of war and to mobilize further forces for the promotion of peace. The German Democratic Republic actively promoted the decision of the United Nations for a good reason. In full compliance with the concerns of the International Year of Peace of the United Nations, the preservation and defense of peace, which was hard-won 41 years ago, was and remains the main goal of the German Socialist State. Our people are among the builders of the new world of socialism, freedom and human dignity. Peace is the top priority of our state policy and the basic concerns of every citizen. The XI. Party Congress of the SED has decided big tasks for the further dynamic development of our society, for the benefit of all citizens of our state. However, their realization is only possible if peace is maintained. The GDR will continue to work for the recovery of the international situation and the return to détente through a policy of results-oriented, factual dialogue and cooperation. The consistent operation for the activation and joint action of all forces of peace, reason and realism with the aim of averting nuclear war through effective steps of arms limitation and disarmament, preventing the militarization of space, abolishing nuclear weapons and confronting them Overcoming the cooperation of the states - that is the priority direction of the foreign policy of the GDR. Like the overwhelming majority of states, of all the peoples of our globe, we expect the International Peace Year 1986 to give more impetus to developments that can secure a life of peace, freedom and happiness for all people. In the GDR, under the chairmanship of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, a national committee is in charge of coordinating all activities in the implementation of the UN International Year of Peace, both at national level and beyond.
