International firefighting competitions are conducted as part of the "International Technical Committee for Preventive Fire and Rescue", CTIF for short. This international organization, founded in 1900, has the purpose, according to its statutes, of exchanging experience in the field of fire-fighting and rescue services. From July 15 to 21, 1985, Vöcklabruck in Upper Austria was completely dedicated to the fire service. During this period, the 8th International Fire Brigade Competitions and at the same time the 5th International Fire Brigade Youth Fairs were held there. The brand image of the special postage stamp shows a firefighter as a detector in a competition discipline, the relay race. A detector has the task to deliver messages or commands of the group commander. In his hand he holds a steel pipe. The background is a silhouette of the city tower of Vöcklabruck.
