International Book Art Exhibition 1989 On the occasion of the International Book Art Exhibition in Leipzig in 1989, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues three multicolored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from 2 May to 1 July 1989 International Book Art Exhibition Leipzig 1989 The 7th International Book Art Exhibition (iba) takes place in the period from 5 May to 11 June 1989 in Leipzig. Under the auspices of the Chairman of the Council of State of the German Democratic Republic, Erich Honecker, organized by the Börsenverein der Deutschen Buchhändler in Leipzig and the Leipzig City Council, the exhibition is a world-class cultural event involving publishers, artists and institutions from all continents participate. As a showcase of contemporary book design and production, iba builds on a progressive tradition that began 75 years ago with the BUGRA, the world's largest book and graphic arts exhibition hosted in Leipzig in 1914. In 1927 she joined the first International Book Art Exhibition. This idea, brought back to life 30 years ago under new conditions in the book and exhibition metropolis of the GDR, was able to attract increasing attention with the exhibitions of 1959, 1965, 1971, 1977 and 1982. In this sense, the 1989 project is also a forum for book design, illustration and graphics typeface, which promote all creative and technical efforts to book equipment, set standards for the level of book art and give suggestions for future typography. Committed to the decisions of the United Nations and UNESCO and to the recommendations of the Helsinki CSCE Final Act, it is intended to make a special contribution to peaceful international cooperation. Starting from the tradition, the character and the goal position of the international book art exhibition 1989, were used as motives for the three special postal stamps initial, d. H. decorated capital letters, which were or are used as popular book jewelery at chapter beginnings. As evidence of the rich ornamentation of Art Nouveau, an art movement at the beginning of the 20th century, which is particularly reflected in the book design of that time, the "B" can be viewed. The typeface artist Wilhelm Müller-Schoenefeld designed this letter for an edition of the work "Maurice Maeterlinck: The Buried Temple", which appeared in 1911.
