The United Nations adopted in its 42nd General Assembly, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the adoption of the "International Plan of Action on Aging" at the 1982 World Assembly in Vienna, a "Declaration on Aging" and 1999 as "International Year of the Elderly" proclaimed. The unprecedented phenomenon of aging populations around the world poses an unprecedented and urgent political and programmatic challenge to governments, NGOs and private groups to ensure that the needs of the elderly and their human productive potential are adequately addressed becomes. The common aim of all activities at all levels should be to create a public awareness of the concerns and needs of a growing number of older people and their immense potential for community service under the motto "to a society for all ages". On the occasion of the "International Year of the Elderly", a "report on the life situation of older people in Austria" will be prepared for the first time in Austria on a scientific basis and on the basis of empirical data. This report, together with the results from the working groups of the Austrian National Committee, is an important contribution to making politics fit for those generational issues that will come up in the coming years through measures in all areas.
