In November 1982, the United Nations declared 1986 the "International Year of Peace". It was proclaimed on October 24, 1985, on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations. One focus of this initiative was to stimulate effective United Nations action to promote peace, international security and cooperation based on the UN Charter and peaceful dispute resolution. Furthermore, the focus was on strengthening the United Nations as a central international system. These included, for example, disarmament and prevention of nuclear war, the promotion of human rights and fundamental freedoms, international cooperation and the interaction between peace and social development, social progress, security, science, culture, religion and the mass media. To serve these purposes, the UN International Year of Peace 1986 has seen a variety of United Nations activities at intergovernmental and national levels.
