The solemn proclamation of the Declaration of Human Rights exactly 20 years ago prompted the United Nations General Assembly to declare 1968 the "International Year of Human Rights". Although this document is not a legally binding treaty but only a recommendation that is morally binding on all member states of the UN, it nevertheless attaches great importance to the further development of humanity. For the first time in the history of the world, a minimum catalog of rights and freedoms was set up here, which should be equally entitled to all human beings - irrespective of their race, language, ideology and social origin. The "human rights", formerly often ridiculed as "fantasies of idealistic dreamers", have become a household name in the last 20 years. In order for the contradiction between word and deed to become ever smaller, however, its constitutional anchoring in the Constitutions of the member states, and thus also in Austria, is indispensable. This special postage stamp documents the state's commitment to human rights as an official stamp of value. The brand image shows the UNO-marked world year symbol - two tongues of fire that symbolize the luminosity of the human rights declaration.
