On the occasion of the state-political reunification of the Saarland with the Federal Republic of Germany a special postage stamp is issued at 10 Pf for the federal territory and at 15 Francs for the use in the Saarland itself. Both commemorative stamps show the same representation with slight modification of the text. The invited artists were given the task to use the newly created coat of arms of the Saarland in a suitable manner as a theme. Ernst Göhlert received a draft. The graphic artist Arthur Schraml supplied two, the graphic designer Herbert Kern seven suggestions. All submitted works are to be regarded as excellent artistic solutions. After careful consideration of their merits, the two designs were designed by Herbert Kern for the execution, in which the coat of arms and the value are white on colored background, while the internal drawing of the coat of arms and the brand text appear in a second color, the latter as overpressure over the colored base. The result is a simple brand image that is self-contained and harmoniously balanced.
