The Reformation was one of the major turning points in Western history. In the Confederation, she is inextricably linked to the humanist pastor Huldrych Zwingli. On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the beginning of his reformation work, the joint issue of a stamp will be published in Germany and Switzerland in May 2019, reminiscent of him and of the Zurich and Upper German Reformation which he initiated. Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) preached from 1519 at the Grossmünster in Zurich against the abuses in the Catholic Church and rejected fundamental beliefs and religious practices that had been incontestable for centuries. After achieving the official recognition of his doctrine, it spread to the Upper German region, where it also established a Reformation clearly delimited from Lutheranism, closely following the ideas of Zurich. The attempts to introduce the new faith throughout Switzerland escalated in the Kappeler wars (1529/31), in the course of which Huldrych Zwingli was killed.
