Historical Memorials in Weimar The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six multi-colored special postal stamps on historical memorials in Weimar. Historical memorials in Weimar 20 Pfennig value: Schillerhaus The Schillerhaus is the oldest of the surviving houses in today's Schillerstraße. It was built in 1773. In 1802 Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805) bought it from the Englishman Mellish of Blyth for 4,200 thalers and inhabited it in the few years until his death. The harmoniously designed façade is decorated in the middle part by a gable. On the upper floor of the house, a literary museum dedicated to the work of the playwright Schiller was established in 1955 by the National Research and Memorial Sites of Classical German Literature in Weimar. The mansard floor, with its living rooms from Schiller's lifetime, is the center of one of the most important memorial sites of German classical music.
