The first car race was held 115 years ago in France between Paris and Rouen. Four years later, the first races took place in Germany. Even then, motorsport was used to demonstrate the quality of the cars and to test technical innovations. Some of these innovations then improved the production vehicles. For example, the antilock braking system ABS, which is widely used today, was originally developed for a racing car. The historic vehicles still inspire the visitors in car museums. But they are particularly impressive in vintage car races, such as the Nürburgring in the Eifel, where thousands of fans "make a pilgrimage".
