Historical Bridges in Berlin, Capital of the GDR With the illustrations of historical bridges in Berlin, the capital of the GDR, the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic issues four multicolored special postage stamps. Special cancellation from October 8 to December 7, 1985 Berlin Bridges Since trade and traffic play a role in the history of mankind, there are bridges. So it is understandable that the oldest bridges date back to the time when the cities were founded or gained their importance. Many bridge constructions testify to the mastery of their builders and are at the same time tools of outstanding technical engineering achievements. Selected bridges are preserved as technical monuments and part of our cultural heritage. 35 Pfennig value: Weidendammer bridge Around 1685, the first wooden drawbridge was built here. Since she obstructed the shipping on the Spree, she had to be stopped in 1823. In 1826 a new cast-iron bridge was opened to traffic. With the opening of the main arm of the Spree for large shipping another new building was inevitable. Between 1895 and 1897, the present bridge was built. It has three flow openings with a length of more than 65 m. Two truss elements designed as cantilever beams receive a sheet metal carrier in the central opening. The cast-iron railing and the candelabra are richly decorated. The bridge, which was heavily destroyed in the Second World War, was rebuilt in 1945.
