The illustration shows Martin of Tours, known as St. Martin on his horse, as he says, gives a beggar a portion of his cape. Before being born in 316 or 317 in Hungary Apostle Gaul, 371 Bishop of Tours, he was a soldier and monk. From the legend come his signs, the coat and the goose. To honor him is celebrated on November 11, St. Martin's Day, to commemorate his mercy. Martin von Tours died on 8 November 397. The proceeds from the sale of the special stamps benefited the Hilfswerk Ludwigshafen.
