On the initiative of the then Federal President Heinrich Lübke was founded in 1962, the German Committee for the fight against hunger. In 1967 the name was changed to "Deutsche Welthungerhilfe". The organization supports projects in Africa, Asia and Latin America, such as drinking water supply and environmental protection, in accordance with the principle of "help for self-help". She works together with local partner organizations. To date, more than 867 million euros have been used to fund approximately 3,100 self-help projects, 820 support programs for children and adolescents and 500 emergency aid programs in 70 countries. The money comes from private donations and grants from the Federal Government, the European Union and the United Nations.
