The painter and graphic artist Max Beckmann was born on February 12, 1884 in Leipzig. After studying painting in Weimar and spending time in Paris and Florence, he began with Impressionist landscape and figure paintings. Under the influence of the First World War, he changed from impressionism to expressionist depiction and devoted himself to the topic of the isolation of modern man. Beckmann belonged to the artist group »Die Brücke«. He emigrated to Amsterdam in 1938. In 1947, Beckmann accepted an invitation from friends to America and since then lived in New York, where he most recently held a chair in art at the Brooklyn Museum School. He died on December 27, 1950 in New York.
