Adolf Hölzel was born on May 13, 1853 in Olmütz. In 1899 he founded the "Neue Dachau Malerschule" and modernized its initially realistic tendency. He used Art Nouveau motifs and thus came to abstract images with a predominantly ornamental character. From 1905 until his death in 1934, Adolf Hölzel worked in Stuttgart and taught at the local art academy. His groundbreaking theory of the pictorial means and his color theory found its way into the teachings of the Bauhaus school through his students Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer.
