A. Paul Weber, (1893-1980), who began his artistic career without academic training as a commercial artist and illustrator, became known primarily for his political-satirical drawings. In his work, he campaigned against the violent, irresponsible intercourse between the people and directed his attacks against the upper classes, the politicians and the church in the first place. After Gestapohaft and concentration camps during the Nazi period, A. Paul Weber lived and worked very withdrawn in Schleswig-Holstein and worked mainly as a graphic designer. From 1951 onwards, his famous "Critical Calendar" with 12 drawings or lithographs on texts by various authors was published annually. Weber's painterly oeuvre is limited and focused in 1931 on a series of new cityscapes, some landscapes and portraits. The painting »Audience« (1970) marks an exception insofar as a theme from the graphic work was painterly edited here. Weber shows the view into the auditorium of a theater during a performance and describes in a humorous way the self-satisfied role of bourgeois cultural consumers. (Text: Martina Padberg, Kunsthistorisches Institut der Universität Bonn)
