Angelika Kauffmann (1741-1807) was one of the most important artists of the 18th century. She had extraordinary artistic and economic success at a time when it was very difficult for women to lead an independent life. The Swiss was not only talented as a painter, but also musically talented. She lived mainly in the cultural centers of Italy and England. Her work encompassed various genres, from religious and mythological paintings to historical paintings and portraits. In many cases, their pictures were also copied by engravers in order to reproduce them. The stamp shows the painting "The Abandoned Ariadne", which can be seen in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden. Shown is a scene from a Greek myth. In the foreground is Ariadne, the daughter of King Minos of Crete. She had helped the Greek hero Theseus defeat the devouring minotaur. Then the hero took her as his fiancee on the return journey to Athens. During a stopover on the island of Naxos, the wine god Dyonisos Theseus forced to continue without Ariadne. Shown is the moment in which Ariadne notices the distant ship of Theseus in the distance.
