National and nature parks should preserve original parts of the landscape as natural heritage. The idea of expressly protecting an area from human use comes from North America. There it was founded in 1872 as the world's first park of its kind the now world famous Yellowstone National Park. The Bavarian Forest National Park was established on 7 October 1970 as the first national park in Germany. It extends over 243 square kilometers in the southeast of Germany. Together with the adjacent Czech Sumava National Park, it forms the largest forest reserve in Central Europe. 300 kilometers of marked hiking trails and 200 kilometers of cycle paths lead visitors to the characteristic beauties of the national park, such as mountain peaks, mountain streams, bogs and even an ice age lake.
