The series "German national and nature parks" draws attention to largely untouched landscapes in Germany with their often unique flora and fauna. Hochharz is one of 13 national parks in Germany with its 1,142 meter high chunk. Since September 12, 1990, mountain spruce forests, moors, cliffs, block slopes and mountain streams have been protected here on some 58 square kilometers. Hochharz currently has a core zone of 22 square kilometers that is untouched by humans. The stream of around two million visitors a year in the rest of the Harz is channeled with the aid of the Brocken Railway in such a way that natural damage is avoided wherever possible.
