The Frankfurt Auschwitz trials can be attributed to a lawyer who was driven into emigration by the National Socialists for political and racist reasons and returned to Germany after 1945: Dr. Fritz Bauer. He played a decisive role in initiating the legal proceedings in the Federal Republic of Germany from 1963 onwards to deal with the Holocaust - especially the crimes committed in the Auschwitz concentration camp. Fritz Bauer, Attorney General in Hesse from 1956 until his death on July 1, 1968, made a contribution to political enlightenment with his tireless efforts. He gave lectures to young people on the roots of National Socialism, the traditional hatred of the Jews, exclusion, and consciously fomented reservations about liberal thoughts and socialist ideas. Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called him one of the key figures in young German democracy on the 50th anniversary of his death. A special postage stamp will appear in his honour in 2019 in the series "Aufrechte Demokraten" (Upright Democrats).
