The series of charity stamps "Helpers of Humanity" is designed to bring to consciousness the merits of agriculture for the nutrition and preservation of the people in the widest circles. In agreement with the consortium of the non-profit welfare organizations and the bodies responsible for representing agriculture, it was decided to choose the image of Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen for the value 600 + 400 centimes, which has gained general significance as the creator of the agricultural cooperative system. Incidentally, it was the job of the graphic artist involved to depict a farmer, a dairymaid and a winemaker at work, in order to grasp the extensive area of agriculture as exhaustively as possible. Herbert Kern, Hermann Eidenbenz, Herbert Scheurich, Erich Meerwald and the working groups Hartmann / Schmalschläger and Hartmann / Röder each received the requested series with four designs. The other graphic artists added their series to individual variants. Thus Eugen O. Sporer and Prof. Paul Pfund each submitted five sheets, Prof. Eduard Ege seven sheets. Max Bittrof delivered two series with additional suggestions, a total of ten individual works. In the series of 51 drafts, the most diverse formal principles were represented, from their purely graphic photographic natures to the areal structure, according to their graphic attitude. The Federal Minister of Post and Telecommunications decided in favor of the series submitted by Erich Meerwald. The graphic artist was commissioned to translate his designs from black and white into a multicolored imagery. With this choice, the wishes of the consortium of the leading associations of the free welfare and the other involved committees were met as far as possible, which promise a high popularity of the brands and thus for the charitable purpose a good sales of these solutions. The series was executed in the multi-color offset printing process at the Bundesdruckerei Berlin. Since November 20, 1947, the French currency was 1 Franc = 100 centimes on the Saarland stamps. the editorial board therefore records the nominal values from catalog number 226 in centimes.
