Special stamp series »For the stamp«: Wuppertal Suspension Railway The issue "For the Stamp" appears with the motif of the Wuppertal Suspension Railway and links the 100th anniversary of the suspension railway with the National Postage Stamp Exhibition, the German Philatelic Championship held in Wuppertal. Planned by the Cologne industrialist and entrepreneur Eugen Langen, the first sod was broken in the summer of 1898 for the suspension railway. Before she began her public operations on March 1, 1901, Kaiser Wilhelm II made a personal test drive on October 24, 1900. The suspension railway alone carried about 23 million passengers in 1999. Current modernization work will enable a 90-second drive in the future.
