In the village of Thaur near Innsbruck, the "Palmesel procession" takes place every year on Palm Sunday for more than 200 years. When moving to the Palm consecration, the children will carry elaborately bound palm-trees, palm forks, palm-bars and many small wood-carved "donkeys" - miniature editions of the "Palmesel". At the heart of the action, however, is the Thaurer "Palmesel": An almost life-size Christ figure sits on a wooden carved donkey. This is mounted on a four-wheeled, low car. In the left hand the Christ figure holds an olive branch, the right hand is raised blessing. The limbs of the dating from 1772 figure are mobile. The Christ figure is dressed in a long red robe and is enveloped by a wide scarlet mantle.
