In Upper Austria, especially in the area of Gmunden, it was customary that the godmother ("Goden") of the woman after childbirth brought a "refusal" (gift of the Goden), which consisted in the main in a chicken soup, which you completely special forces. This soup was served in its own "earthenware bowl", which was intended for the child as a lasting souvenir of the "Goden". The earthenware shells, which were always created on an individual order, are thus regarded as testimonies of popular saint worship. The small, flat-round bowls, whose covers could be reversed with three short feet, were painted inside and out, and always carried in the background the image of the patron saint of the person or a symbol referring to the character traits.
