Before winter-proof motor vehicles and cleared roads were part of the usual picture of our lives, in the Alpine countries snow shifts were necessary to replace the usual wheeled vehicles with skid steers. These sledges were usually pulled by horses, but mainly for logging were used in the winter months so-called sliding carriage. For the snow fun of the children made small, simple sledges, sledding. The presented toboggan from the Styrian Ausseerland, shows a masterpiece of native woodcarving. The seat forms the back of a stooped man, whose feet rest on the skids, while his outstretched arms seem to push the toboggan in front of him. Expressive is also the face of the figure.
