This custom is located in Salzburg Flachgau and neighboring Rupertigau. The Aperschnalzen is a noise with a double function: The loud bang of the "Goaßeln" (hostages, whips) is to drive away the winter fiends and at the same time awaken in winter "sleeping nature" to new growth. Therefore, the Aperschnalzen can be described as a vegetation cult. The term "aper" means snow-free. The used "Goaßeln" are up to 3.50 m long. Today, there are more than 100 "passes" (groups) in the Flachgau district of Salzburg and Rupertigau alone (groups) with around 1200 Aperschnalzern. Every year, passers-by from Salzburg and Bavaria measure their art at the Rupertigau-Preisschnalzen.
