Lusatian folk art The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes three multi-colored special postage stamps depicting folk art motifs from Lusatia. The amount raised will be made available to the Central Committee of People's Solidarity. Lusatian folk art The area between the Elbe and the Oder on the upper Spree and Neisse, in the eastern part of the German Democratic Republic, is known under the historical name of Lusatia. Old customs are still cultivated in this area and artisan objects are produced by the people. A small selection of them shows the motifs of this special postage stamp series. For the 50-pfennig value: The motif of "Negress and sailor" represents a pastry in the Lusatian way. From the tradition of hand-made pastry, the dough is first rolled flat with the noodle roll and the motive then cut free, decorated with a set and ausgekochenem Dough, almonds, poppy seeds and colored glaze, the folk-connecting themes combine with life. Other traditional themes, such as the childbringer riding on a stork, Adam and Eve, the Eve with the sinful serpent, or even a village rider still show in their design and variety of decoration a piece of that folksy healthy grossness and worldliness that still inspires the beholder today makes you smile. A pastry that gives as a gift so much joy that it would soon be a pity to bite into it.
