Lusatian folk art The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes three multi-colored special postage stamps depicting folk art motifs from Lusatia. The amount raised will be made available to the Central Committee of People's Solidarity. Lusatian folk art The area between the Elbe and the Oder on the upper Spree and Neisse, in the eastern part of the German Democratic Republic, is known under the historical name of Lusatia. Old customs are still cultivated in this area and artisan objects are produced by the people. A small selection of them shows the motifs of this special postage stamp series. At the 10-pfennig value: At Christmas time and as a gift for the occasion of an engagement and a wedding, people in the Lausitz used to make crafted and freely shaped pastries. For the production of the "model" was made by the Formstecher, transferred the motive mirror image by means of a crack on a 3 to 4 cm thick board of apple or pear wood and gouged trough-shaped. In domestic or village - urban baking, the wooden mold was sprinkled with flour and the dough pressed in, so that the picture was semi - reliefed and baked on a plate. The motifs, which were mostly strongly influenced by the courtly, showed distinguished couples, proud riders, such as the hussars, hunters and various animals, hearts and flowers. The sculptors have further developed the motifs using popular pictorial materials in folk taste and have lovingly worked out the details in particular.
