Important Personalities, Edition 1970 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No special first-day envelope Ernst BARLACH, sculptor, graphic artist and poet, was born on 2 January 1870 in Wedel (Holstein). He studied in Hamburg, Dresden and Paris. Since 1910 he lived in Güstrow. Ernst Barlach was a major advocate of bourgeois humanism. He suffered from the anti-human circumstances of late-bourgeois society, without recognizing the historical-class causes. He only saw the sufferings of men and gave them in the figures of peasants, beggars and poor, movingly. His artworks are characterized by a strong mystical religiosity. Ernst Barlach became a member of the Prussian Academy of Arts in 1919 and an honorary member of the Munich Art Academy in 1925. In 1924 he received the Kleistpreis. The Hitler fascists prevented him from creating sculptures and removed his works from the public. On October 24, 1938 Ernst Barlcich died in Rostock.
