Important Personalities, Edition 1970 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No special first-day cover letter Johann Christian Friedrich HÖLDERLIN was born on March 20, 1770 in Lauffen (Neckar), the son of a monastery court master. He attended the Maulbronn seminary and the monastery in Tübingen. In Tübingen Hölderlin created his early odes, where he took Klopstock and Schiller as role models. Later he became friends with Hegel and Schelling. The tragedy of his life was the contradiction between his ideas of an ideal social order and the German misery. He was enthusiastic about Greek antiquity and wanted to revolutionize his homeland, inspired by the French Revolution. He sought the noble and honorable in man. In his odes he sang the German homeland. His works are among the best of German national literature. In 1793 Hölderlin Hofmeister in Waltershausen (Thuringia). Since 1794 he lived in Jena. In 1795 he became Hofmeister again. In 1801 he went to Bordeaux. From there he returned in 1802 physically and mentally disordered to Germany. He became seriously ill and henceforth lived in mental derangement. On June 7, 1843 Hölderlin died in Tübingen.
