Important Personalities, Edition 1970 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes six special postage stamps with illustrations of important personalities. No special first-day cover letter Ludwig van BEETHOVEN was born on 16 or 17 December 1770 in Bonn. From 1792 he worked as a freelance composer in Vienna. In his tone poems, starting from the French Revolution, the desire for freedom and the democratic yearning of the ascending bourgeois society are overwhelmingly expressed. His works include piano sonatas, string quartets, symphonies (3rd Symphony - Eroika, the political confession of the 9th Symphony), the opera "Fidelio" Ouvertüren and the stage music for Goethe's "Egmont". After Haydn and Mozart Beethoven was the third Grand Master of Viennese Classicism. In his late works he leads to the Romantic era. After increasing loss of hearing in the last three decades of his life Ludwig von Beethoven died on March 26, 1827 in Vienna.
