Significant Personalities Edition 1969 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four special postage stamps depicting important personalities. The naturalist Alexander Freiherr von Humboldt was born on September 14, 1769 in Berlin. He studied at the Bergakademie in Freiberg and was then active as a mountain captain and Oberbergmeister. From 1799 to 1804 he toured the American continent and then eastern areas of Russia. Particular importance for the Latin American peoples was attained for the oppressed and slaves as well as for the liberation movement of Spanish colonial rule. Alexander von Humboldt is the founder of animal and plant geography, climatology and modern country representation. He even worked in the physical field and promoted all scientific research in every way. On May 6, 1859 Alexander von Humboldt died in Berlin.
