Significant Personalities Edition 1969 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four special postage stamps depicting important personalities. The proletarian painter Otto Nagel was born on September 27, 1894 in Berlin. From the beginning his life and artistic activity was closely linked with the proletariat. He was the first to create the image of the proletarian fighter, thus creating the foundations for socialist realism. Since 1955 Otto Nagel was president of the Association of Visual Artists in Germany and from 1956 to 1962 president of the German Academy of Arts. His work has received many prestigious state awards. On July 12, 1967, Otto Nagel died in Berlin.
