Significant Personalities Edition 1969 The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the German Democratic Republic publishes four special postage stamps depicting important personalities. The Danish poet Martin Andersen Nexö was born on June 26, 1869, near Copenhagen. He grew up on the island of Bornholm, attended a community college and became a teacher. In 1919, Martin Andersen Nexö was one of the co-founders of the Communist Party of Denmark. He traveled to the Soviet Union in 1922 and stayed in Germany from 1923 to 1930, in Allensbach on Lake Constance. In 1941 he was arrested in occupied Denmark, but he managed to escape via Sweden to the Soviet Union. In 1951, the German Democratic Republic offered him a home in Dresden, where he died on 1 June 1954. For his numerous novels on the life of the proletariat and on the labor movement Martin Andersen Nexö received in 1951 the National Prize of the German Democratic Republic. In 1953 he became an honorary member of the German Academy of Arts.
