IGNAZ PHILIPP SEMMELWEIS, Obstetrician, was born on July 1, 1818 in Ofen (formerly part of Budapest). He worked as a professor in Vienna and Budapest. In 1847 he realized that the childbirth fever was prevented by the hands of the obstetrician. Ignaz Semmelweis became the "savior of the mothers". He died on August 13, 1865 in Döbling near Vienna.
