European Heritage Year 1975 The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe decided in 1972 to declare 1975 the European Heritage Year. Under the motto "A future for our past", the Council of Europe invited its members to carry out an intensive information and advertising campaign for the common architectural heritage with the help of national committees. The aim of the European Heritage Year is not primarily the conservation and restoration of monuments of art historical importance, it is more about the more threatened by economic growth after the Second World War and the demands of modern civilization typical old town centers, neighborhoods and villages in their historically grown buildings to protect and preserve. The German National Committee for the Preparation of the European Year of Historic Monuments named the cities Alsfeld, Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Trier, Xanten and Berlin as model cities for special monument preservation services. The cities considered by the German Federal Post Office with special postage stamps show the following motifs: Alsfeld: Main Market Square with Town Hall Rothenburg ob der Tauber: Plönlein, Siebersturm and Koboldzeller Turm Trier: Die Steipe Xanten: General view
