The European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) has, in the context of the XI. Ordinary Plenary Assembly in Vienna as a theme for the European brands 1988 "Transport and communication tools" selected and recommended to present primarily modern means of transport, which meet the ecological requirements, as well as communication means, where the modern techniques are applied. New technologies - above all on the basis of microelectronics - shape the future. They make great progress and developments, especially in the field of information and communication technology possible and allow the realization of more powerful telecommunications systems than those used in today's communication networks. The future of telecommunications will be dominated by ISDN, the Integrated Services Digital Network (Integrated Services Digital Network). With the ISDN all known types of communication such as voice, text, image and data can be transmitted together in only one network with only one telecommunications connection and only one phone number in a single digital waveform. So you do not need special networks anymore. A salient feature is a unified outlet for the various telecommunications terminals (telephone, telefax, teletex, image terminals), thus contributing to the liberalization of the terminal equipment market. With ISDN, a new era of telecommunication technology is beginning, with which many new developments will be initiated that will support the convergence of information and data processing with telecommunications in favorable and novel applications. The ISDN is based on the existing telephone network. This hitherto analog telephone network is z. Z. modernized, d. H. it is digitized. The digitization of the existing telephone network is a necessary and operationally and economically sensible measure. The German Federal Post will introduce ISDN in the Federal Republic starting from 1988 and presumably from 1993 provide a nationwide ISDN service offer. It is coordinating its activities to interconnect the various national ISDNs into a Europe-wide and finally worldwide ISDN with the partner countries.
