In the context of the XI. At the Ordinary General Assembly in Vienna, the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) has chosen the common theme "Nature and Environment" for the European brands in 1986. The German Federal Post Office addresses with "water conservation" and "clean air" two areas that are at the center of efforts. Billions of years ago, life was created in the water. All living things consist to a greater or lesser extent of water - we humans z. B. to more than 2/3. We can live for weeks without eating, but not for more than 5 or 6 days without drinking. Man, animal, plant, but also industry, trade and power plants - they all need water. Water is a precious commodity that we have to handle carefully. There is no water shortage in the Federal Republic of Germany. Also, the quality of the surface waters could, as the comparison of water quality maps of 1985 and 1980 shows, be significantly improved. Today more than 90% of the inhabitants are connected to the sewage system. The wastewater of around 80% of the population is biologically cleaned; 88% of the inhabitants of the sewage system are already in use. By these measures, especially the oxygen-consuming organic wastewater ingredients have been significantly reduced. Nevertheless, the situation is still unsatisfactory. A major problem is currently the pollution of waters with dangerous, z. The Federal Government has implemented and initiated a series of measures aimed at preventing or reducing the discharge of these substances by action at the source. They improve the precautionary protection of the waters and thus preserve the most important food of the people. The motif shows excerpts from the 1501 - 1504 "David" by Michelangelo, Florence, Galleria dell 'Accademia. Mouth and nose are symbols of the pollutant load experienced by the senses and are intended to make it clear that in all efforts to protect the environment the human being is the center of attention and that all efforts are ultimately made for his health and the continued existence of mankind.
