For the Xth Ordinary General Assembly of the CEPT in Brussels, the theme »Historical Events« was selected for 1982. Europe has grown together over the past 25 years. Today, thanks to its great economic potential, the community, which has since grown to ten Member States, makes a major contribution to social justice and stability in Europe. It addresses European citizens in a number of ways: - It has built a large common market by reducing tariffs, has promoted trade and created jobs; the common commercial policy has made it the strongest trading power in the world. - The common agricultural policy, despite certain shortcomings, has ensured the supply of food to European consumers; it makes an important contribution to overcoming hunger in the world. - Every citizen of the Community can travel today with a minimum of border formalities, starting from 1985 even with a European passport. - Every EC citizen can look for work in each Member State. - Regional and Social Funds help reduce the wealth gap between regions. - The European Monetary System has softened fluctuations between European currencies and promoted trade. - The Community has created partnership cooperation between developed and developing countries. - The 10 Member States collectively vote on important world affairs issues. The promotion of European unification is a fundamental element of German policy to safeguard common interests and unite the peoples in a united Europe. (Text: Federal Foreign Office, Bonn)
