The countries of the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) decided at the meeting of their "Post" commission on 15 April 1975 in Malaga-Torremolinos to select the theme "Monuments" for the European brands in 1978. The German Federal Post Office chose the Old Town Halls of Bamberg, Regensburg and Esslingen am Neckar. The picturesque town hall of the imperial city of Regensburg is made up of several irregularly grouped buildings of various stylistic epochs, the so-called Old Town Hall with the tower, the Kurfürstenzimmern and the Reichssaalbau in the west and the Baroque New Town Hall in the east. The Reichssaalbau was built around 1630 as a dance hall for the patriciate and festivities of the city council. With the 1408 portal, it is the most important work of Gothic secular architecture in Regensburg. For centuries the site of splendid and memorable Imperial assemblies, the building is well-preserved witness of imperial city, German and European history. From 1663 to 1806 the imperial assembly met here in permanence and constituted as the Everlasting Reichstag the first permanent German parliamentary institution. An exemplary rehabilitation and restoration of the building was the contribution of the city of Regensburg to the European Heritage Year 1975. (Text: City of Regensburg)
