This year's Europa stamp is under the motto "Expeditions". The special postage stamp deals with the Teleki-Höhnel expedition to Lake Rudolf. This first, large-scale East African expedition started in January 1887 and opened a 250,000 km2, previously unexplored area in the northern part of the East African Lakeland Highlands. On March 6, 1888 saw Teleki and Höhnel as the first Europeans, the approximately 300 km long riverless lake. In gratitude for the interest which Archduke Kronprinz Rudolf had given the expedition, she named the lake "Rudolf-See".
