The quest to identify the global impact of human-environment interaction is becoming increasingly important in the context of climate change, the greenhouse effect and its impact on our ecosystem. As an essential instrument for the investigation of these phenomena, satellites are considered. Already since 1972, the American Landsat series and since 1986 the French SPOT satellites deliver images and data from space. As the first Earth observation satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA) launched in April 1991, the ERS-1 with an Ariane 4 of Kourou (French Guiana). It is primarily intended to provide data on polar ice regions and oceans for application-oriented, economic and scientific objectives.
