On 1 July 1998 Austria will take over the EU Presidency for six months, chairing it at all levels of the Council and in the preparatory bodies. The main topics of the work of the Union during this period will be: - measures against unemployment of currently 11%, - the introduction of the EURO on 1 January 1999, - the enlargement of the Union in the coming years, - the negotiations on the reforms of the Agricultural and structural policy and the financing of the Union, - the protection of natural resources and internal security. With the Presidency, Austria will be at the center of global attention and will have the opportunity to significantly influence its profile and status within the European Union through constructive work.
