The diversity of nature provides the foundations of our existence: it provides food, water, fertile soils and fuels. Insects protect crops by pollinating plants. Forests store carbon dioxide and thus act against climate change. Only if we protect biodiversity will future generations have a secure livelihood. The new edition from the series "For the protection of the environment" shows the "polar bear Knut", who was born on 5 December 2006 in the Berlin Zoological Garden. At the suggestion of the Federal Environment Ministry, which had adopted a sponsorship for the polar bear, "Knut" became the symbol of the 9th UN Conservation Conference, which took place in May 2008 in Bonn.
