About 71 percent of the earth's surface is covered by seas. They are rich in biodiversity and have immense economic value. But the oceans are threatened: they suffer from overfishing, the introduction of hazardous substances, the consequences of climate change, the introduction of alien species and the loss of ancestral species and habitats. There is only one answer to this situation: there must be no "continue as before". Rather, we need to operate so that future generations can find healthy seas and use their resources. To do this, we should see the marine ecosystem as a whole, balance marine conservation and marine use, and consider marine conservation issues in all policy areas concerned.
