On June 5, 1973, the "Day of the Environment" was celebrated for the first time in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Federal Republic thus follows a recommendation of the United Nations Environment Conference, which met in June 1972 in Stockholm. The "Day of the Environment" aims to increase public interest in questions of environmental planning and environmental protection. The motifs of the individual brands in this series deal with core areas of environmental protection, namely - air pollution control, - noise abatement, - waste disposal, - water balance. All brands also show uniformly the environmental symbol of the United Nations, which has been selected by the Federal Government and all provincial governments as a German eco-label at the same time. The "Day of the Environment" is about raising the awareness that his own behavior can contribute to environmental degradation as well as to environmental improvement. The Federal Government's Environmental Program of Autumn 1971 highlighted the need to promote environmentally conscious behavior in all parts of society. At the same time, the special postage stamp series »Environmental Protection« points to legislation in the area of environmental protection. For the areas of air, noise and waste, the federal government has since 1972 the legislative authority. A Federal Waste Management Act is already in force, the draft of the Federal Government for a Federal Immission Control Act on air pollution control and noise abatement is in the parliamentary consultation. For the area of water, the Federal Government is aiming for a change in the constitution. The corresponding legislative proposal is already available to the legislative bodies. Water: The water balance is also disturbed. The self-cleaning power of many waters has long been overwhelmed. This reduces the location value of many areas, but also the recreational value of the landscape. Here and there, the lack of clean water begins to inhibit economic development. There is also concern about the rapidly increasing pollution of the high seas. Despite overburdening of the waters, supplying the population in the economy with "good" water was still possible. However, this must not be confused that the need to catch up, especially on sewage treatment plants and sewer systems, is high.
