The white stork is one of the most popular large birds in Europe. While it is threatened with extinction in many European countries, about 4000 breeding pairs still live in Germany, most of them in Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. White storks breed mainly in lowlands and wetlands of Western and Eastern Europe, in Asia Minor and North Africa. They often build their big travel signatories in colonies. Small mammals, frogs and insects serve as food for them. In August, the birds leave their breeding grounds and fly thousands of miles into their wintering regions, but return to their breeding grounds between March and April.
