Freshwater pearl mussel The freshwater pearl mussel is one to ten centimeters long bean-shaped freshwater mussel. Its black-brown skin often looks like eaten away. Originally it was widespread throughout Europe. The largest collections were in the three-country corner Bavaria, Saxony, Bohemia. She lives mainly in clean and lime-poor streams. Here she can be more than 100 years old. If a foreign body penetrates into the shell, a brown pearl can form that was in demand as a jewel at the beginning of the 20th century.
