The Austrian Schützenbund is Austria's oldest sports federation and celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1979. Austria was also involved in the founding of the International Shooting Union in 1907. International championships have been held in this area since 1897. Austrian riflemen were able to place several times excellent and won as early as 1901 in Lucerne, the world title in standing competition team. In 1907 in Zurich, the Enns Karl Wiengarner was single champion in the standing competition, and in 1960 Hubert Hammerer from Vorarlberg managed to win the Olympic gold medal in Rome. The Austrian Schützenbund had nine associations in 1979, in which nearly 30,000 shooters were actively involved. In addition to the European Championships in 1979, a federal shooting in Innsbruck and the World Cup in Linz was performed. The competitions for the European Championships were carried out in an exhibition hall in Graz with electric disc transport systems. The first European air rifle and air pistol championships were held in 1971 in Czechoslovakia and have been held annually since then. Austria was the first country to hold the European Championships for the second time in 1979.
